The Canton of Zurich, Zurich Metropolitan Conference and Innovation Zurich have published a new report on their Innovation Sandbox for Artificial Intelligence in the Zurich metropolitan area. Between 2022 and 2024, the sandbox implemented five projects in the areas of smart parking, autonomous systems, automated infrastructure maintenance, machine translation and AI in education, according to a statement from the Canton of Zurich's Division of Business and Economic Development. The report covers all the completed projects.
The Sandbox is designed as a new environment for testing and developing AI technologies. The programme, which began in 2021, aims to build regulatory expertise for AI, promote AI innovation, strengthen knowledge transfer and provide impetus for the future regulation of artificial intelligence. According to the statement, the sandbox has already had a “positive impact on the AI ecosystem” in its first few years. Building on these successes, there are plans to implement new projects between 2024 and 2026.
Alongside information on the completed projects, the new report provides an overview of the challenges faced by the AI location and the innovation sandbox’s goals. It also documents the selection of use cases, the development of an AI test environment and the safeguarding of knowledge transfer. The final chapter of the report is dedicated to a concluding summary of the sandbox design. ce/hs
