Embotech, a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, is collaborating with NTT DATA, an IT specialist from Japan’s Tokyo prefecture, and the Paris-based automotive supplier Valeo. According to a press release, the partners have founded a consortium called VEN.AI. The aim is to develop a joint solution for automated parking and bring it to the global market.
Specifically, they hope to launch a solution that places very few demands on the vehicle itself. Cars will be guided to their parking spaces using sensors, connectivity, and offboard computing. Embotech will provide its movement planning software for the partnership, NTT DATA will bring its specialist knowledge in the areas of connectivity and computing, and Valeo will be responsible for supplying the required sensors.
The partners first plan to focus on application areas within car factories; for instance, automating the movement of vehicles from one production station to the next. This shall increase the efficiency of assembly lines. The next step for the consortium would be to also look at other application areas, such as parking in garages.
Embotech’s CEO Andreas Kyrtatos stated: “VEN.AI proves that autonomous driving, when employed in the proper context, has an immediate business case with the potential to disrupt the future of automotive manufacturing and distribution.” ssp
