Goldau SZ – This year’s main prize of the Central Switzerland Chamber of Industry and Commerce Innovation Award has been awarded to Garaventa AG. The ropeway manufacturer from Goldau impressed the jury with its cylindrical lift in Stoos.

When developing the new funicular ropeway from Schwyz-Schlattli to Stoos, the ropeway manufacturer had to overcome three challenges: a horizontal, barrier-free access; the slimmest possible lift profile to keep the cross sections of the two tunnels on the route as small as possible; and handle an incline of 47.7 degrees.

Garaventa AG mastered these three challenges by developing a funicular lift consisting of rotating, cylindrical passenger compartments. The innovative concept for “the world’s steepest funicular railway” won this year’s Central Switzerland Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHZ) Innovation Award, which is now in its 32nd year. B. Brain Medical and siworks AG were honoured with a recognition award.

The new Stoos lift by Garaventa conquers the 1.74-kilometre stretch with its 744-meter height difference in just five minutes. Passenger comfort is increased by means of a hydraulically regulated system that aligns the cabins, all without disturbing the panoramic views. According to the IHZ, Garaventa has mastered the “balancing act between innovation and immediate market readiness” as the tight deadlines did not actually allow for the usual additional series of tests with prototypes.
