Zurich - Lawyers can interact with case documents with the help of Herlock.ai. Upon request, Herlock uses natural language to establish relationships between various pieces of data and to summarize the facts. In addition, the system is able to handle citations and provide additional links.

Herlock.ai, the legaltech solution developed by the Zurich-based data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) specialist D One, supports lawyers in a manner reminiscent of ChatGPT: On the basis of what are known as large language models (algorithms trained with large text volumes) and generative AI, legal professionals are able to interact with their own case documents using the latest version of the system.

According to a press release, lawyers can ask their documents what the defendant is accused of or what their relationship is with a specific organization. According to the information, Herlock provides answers formulated in natural language, establishes the relationship between various pieces of information and summarizes the facts. In addition, the press release explains that Herlock always provides relevant sources and links to additional information and analyses, which is in stark contrast to the freely available AI systems.

Case events are also arranged chronologically on an interactive timeline. In addition, Herlock highlights connections. The D One system was originally created to deal with one of the largest commercial criminal proceedings in Swiss history, since which time the system has been fine-tuned and continuously enhanced. Today Herlock.ai operates as a standalone start-up.

CEO Barbara Müry Erni explains that the desire behind the D One system was “to make what are often extensive datasets for legal cases digitally searchable and analyzable via a user-friendly interface”. She adds that, thanks to the large language models and generative AI that are available today, support for lawyers can now be brought “to a whole new level” with the Timeline and the Document Chat functionalities. ce/mm
