An innovative system is set to facilitate the automatic tracking of clinical waste in real-time in Ticino. To develop the system, the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) worked with the cantonal hospital administration Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC), according to a statement. Also involved was Valbenne SA, a Swiss company specialized in the management of hospital waste. The project, which is scheduled to last two years, is being funded by the Swiss innovation agency Innosuisse.
Real-time monitoring offers further guarantees to drastically reduce the possibility of mismanagement, explained Dr. Alberto Ferrante, head of the project at the USI Advanced Learning and Research Institute (AlaRI). Such a system, which Ferrante says falls within the realm of the Internet of Things, is particularly interesting in the case of waste generated as a result of infectious diseases.
According to project co-head Dr. Marco D'Ambros from CodeLounge at the USI Software Institute (SI), the system being developed will also automate management processes. He said: “Data collection will produce statistics and forecasts to optimise the process, introducing potential savings for hospitals and waste disposal companies.”
