Zurich/Tokyo - NTT Data has placed an order with Nexxiot for more than 600,000 Cargo Monitors for shipping containers. The Nexxiot solution can be used to monitor transportation conditions and is able to supply data for automated cargo insurance payments in the event of damage.

The Cargo Monitor from Nexxiot is to be integrated in the cargo tracking solution developed by NTT DATA, a global IT service provider based in Tokyo, in partnership with the German software corporation SAP. Following a pilot program in which 400 live shipments were tracked using the monitors developed by Nexxiot on the basis of the Internet of Things (IoT), NTT DATA has now opted to enhance its cargo tracking with the devices from the Zurich-based TradeTech supplier, further details of which can be found in a press release.

The sensors will be used to monitor and track shipping containers for the Connected Product solution from NTT DATA in real time. According to the press release, NTT DATA is planning to deploy more than 600,000 of Nexxiot’s Cargo Monitor devices over the next five years. In relation to cargo losses, the solutions should help to determine the causes of damage in the case of fragile and environmentally sensitive cargo.

The data collected can be configured via Connected Product in such a way that insurance policies can be automatically triggered and executed in the event that goods are not transported under certain pre-defined conditions. “Nexxiot’s Cargo Monitors are a critical piece of our effort to increase visibility, reduce supply chain disruptions and support a smarter and more sustainable world”, explains Xavier Rovira, Global Head of SAP Unit at NTT DATA EMEAL, in the press release.
