Manno/Novazzano - Researchers from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) and Paradox Engineering SA have developed a new localization and tracking system for people and objects. The project was implemented with the help of autonomous drones.

Researchers from the Institute of Applied Systems and Electronics (ISAE) at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) have, together with engineers from the company Paradox Engineering based in Novazzano in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland, developed a new localization and tracking system for people and objects. To this end, autonomous drones were used, further details of which can be found in a press release issued by the university. Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology allows target objects to be identified precisely and simultaneously. The new Fly-Discovery project can locate trackers worn by people or attached to objects, and with the help of UWB technology, mobile devices can also be located. Other feasible application areas include logistics, such as in connection with the transportation of goods, as well as first aid operations or searching for missing people, for example.

“Thanks to the successful collaboration between electronic, IT and mechanical engineers, and drone experts, the results exceeded our expectations”, comments Samuel Poretti, Head of RF Electronics and Telecommunications at ISEA, in the press release. He adds: “Collaborating with a telecommunications company with extensive experience allowed us to develop cutting-edge technologies and a product that leverages the latest advancements in UWB”.

“The Fly-Discovery project has introduced multiple innovative elements, resulting from the synergy between the university's multidisciplinary expertise and our company”, as Gaetano Calabrò, Project Manager at Paradox Engineering, explains. ce/ww
