SUPSI has founded a new institute called MeDiTech. This specialist unit is based in the Department of Innovative Technologies. Its focus is on digital technologies to support personalized diagnostics and treatment methods.
The new institute was presented at a press conference on Tuesday and will be divided into three areas of research and teaching: biomedical signal processing, digital health and medical devices. The founding of MeDiTech marks an “important step that supports SUPSI’s strategy for the development of the life sciences sector”, said SUPSI General Director Franco Gervasioni in a press release.
The objective of the institute is to become a regional and nationally recognized center for the conception and development of digital solutions and medical, diagnostic and therapeutic devices based on innovative technologies. In addition, it intends to exploit synergies with the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) and its affiliated institutes. MeDiTech is also planning a close cooperation with the Cantonal Hospital Authority (EOC) as well as hospitals and companies operating in the sector in Ticino.
Establishing this institute allows for “the best synergies to be exploited between medtech expertise at SUPSI and its applications,” said Emanuele Carpanzano, Director of the Department of Innovative Technologies at SUPSI. The plan is also to develop education and research projects that come up with specific solutions for improving the quality and efficiency of medical diagnostics and treatments by means of innovative digital technologies.
