Mollis - The lease agreement for Switzerland’s largest fish farm has been signed. Swiss Blue Salmon AG intends to invest a sum of 130 million francs in animal-friendly and ecological salmon farming, which should create a total of 50 jobs. The plans for the construction project also include a solar energy plant covering 17,000 square meters.

Swiss Blue Salmon AG is “definitely” building Switzerland's largest fish farm in Mollis in the canton of Glarus, further details of which can be found in a press release issued by the future operators of a land-based recirculation system for Atlantic salmon. The lease agreement has now been signed. “As a result, it is expected that 50 new jobs will be created in the region, with investment of around 130 million Swiss francs”, the press release states.

Swiss Blue Salmon is striving to play a leading role in the rapidly growing Swiss aquaculture industry, with the aim of being known for “a minimal ecological footprint and high level of animal welfare”. Initiator and CEO Ruedi Ryf explains in the press release: “Today, 99 percent of salmon is imported - occasionally from dubious sources. We intend to bring this production to Switzerland and contribute to the development of locally and sustainably produced food”. In this way, jobs are created and food security can be increased, while the climate and wildlife are protected, Ryf adds.

According to Ryf, Swiss Blue Salmon will leverage the benefits of state-of-the-art technologies such as sensors, image recognition, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data to ensure well-being of the animals and their health. The water is recycled. Covering 17,000 square meters, one of the largest solar systems in Switzerland is being built on top of the building, which will be cooled using water from Lake Walen. According to the press release, there is huge potential for another innovation rooted in the canton of Glarus in connection with sustainable fish feed. This is centered on cultivating mushrooms and other raw materials, or even insect breeding, for example. ce/mm
