According to a press release, the medical simulator specialist VirtaMed is now working with the Italian firm Medical Microinstruments S.p.A. (MMI). With the Symani Surgical System, the Pisa-based MedTech firm has developed the only robotic platform to offer wristed microinstruments. According to information from MMI itself, the system combines NanoWrist instruments, featuring the world’s smallest robotic wrist, with NanoScale technology, which helps to scale movements and reduces tremor.
VirtaMed develops simulations for the Symani system that make it possible to track training via the system itself. With these Virtual Reality-based simulations, surgeons can practice a variety of microsurgical procedures with the robotic system.
“Surgeon confidence and patient safety are essential to successful outcomes”, comments Stefan Tuchschmid, co-CEO of VirtaMed, in the press release. “By offering surgeons the opportunity to use simulations to practice these highly complex surgeries, we create an environment of continual improvement with a focus on patient care”, he adds.
Mark Toland, CEO of MMI, explains in the press release that MMI was looking for a realistic training environment for microsurgery. In VirtaMed, the company has now found a partner whose training methods strengthen the experience gained by surgeons and promote the acceptance of robot-assisted microsurgery.
VirtaMed is headquartered at the IJZ, an innovation and start-up park located in the Greater Zurich Area.
