Dübendorf/Durango - A first North American helicopter operator has now ordered the VR-based training device from VRM Switzerland, which has already served a number of European customers. The flight simulator developed by the company based in the Greater Zurich Area is used to train pilots on Airbus helicopters.

VRM Switzerland has delivered its training simulator for Airbus helicopter pilots to a first US operator. According to a press release, the North American helicopter operator Colorado Highland Helicopters, based in Durango in the US State of Colorado, and its flight school will use the simulator to train pilots in basic skills as well as mountain flights and special operations. VRM Switzerland is currently presenting the Airbus H125 FSTD, its innovative development on the basis of Virtual Reality (VR), at the HAI Heli Expo 2022 in Dallas, Texas, directly adjacent to the Airbus Helicopters stand.

Once the pilot puts on the VR headset, they are transported into a “fully immersive training environment”, comments Fabi Riesen, CEO and co-founder of VRM Switzerland, in the press release. This includes a 360-degree, 3D panoramic view, scenario-based training exercises, high-resolution visualization of ground maneuvers and a highly dynamic motion platform that pilots can use to physically feel even the smallest changes in flight attitude. “This has the great advantage that the pilot has exactly the same perceptions as in the real helicopter”, the press release explains.

Colorado Highland Helicopters will use the VRM device for training credits in connection with pilot certificates. According to Brandon Laird, owner and Chief Pilot of Colorado Highland Helicopters, this represents a “significant milestone” for the qualification of a VR device in the USA. VRM already works in close cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration with the aim of improving flight safety and for the introduction of new pilot training methods that help to cut costs.
