Flughafen Zürich AG has been working with solar fuel pioneer Synhelion since 2020. Now, the two companies have signed an offtake agreement for solar fuel that will cover a five-year period, as they reported in a press release. From 2027, Flughafen Zürich AG will purchase 30,000 liters of solar diesel from Synhelion every year. The company from Lugano will produce the renewable fuels at its first commercial plant, RISE, in Spain.
In a first step, Flughafen Zürich AG will use this renewable diesel to power the passenger buses on the airport premises. Once these are converted to electric operation, the fuel will be used for special vehicles that cannot. “It is our goal to achieve net zero corporate greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 – without offsetting,” explained Emanuel Fleuti, Head of Sustainability and Environment at Flughafen Zürich AG. “Synhelion’s fuel is an important piece of the puzzle.”
Philipp Furler, CEO and Co-Founder of Synhelion, is confident that “demand for innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions will continue to rise”. Synhelion and Flughafen Zürich AG “are working together on scaling solar fuels with this offtake agreement and thus making an active contribution to the energy transition”. ce/hs
