The University of Zurich (UZH) is one of the leading research universities in Europe and a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU). It is a world leader in research in medicine, business and economics, and several of the natural sciences. The University’s international standing is reflected in the many distinctions awarded to its members over the years, including 12 Nobel Prizes.
With a current enrollment of around 26,000 students, the University of Zurich is the largest university in Switzerland and with around 100 subject areas it boasts the widest range of courses in the country. Around 5,000 people in 130 departments across seven faculties conduct cutting-edge research and teach and encourage the next generation of scholars. Founded in 1833, UZH was the first university in Europe to be established by a democratic state.
The professors at UZH are passionate about delivering inspiring, research-based teaching and also enjoy time and freedom for reflection, creativity and experimentation. UZH actively encourages the transfer of knowledge and technology between academia and business – the University’s many spin-offs and start-ups make an important contribution to the innovative and flourishing economy of Zurich and the surrounding area.
