Zurich/Friedrichshafen - An algorithm developed by Embotech is contributing to greener mobility. It helps to optimize an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system developed by ZF. This facilitates more efficient driving strategies and increases vehicle range by up to 8 percent. The solution is suitable for series production.

Embotech has developed an algorithm for an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system of ZF Friedrichshafen, the global technology group and automotive supplier based in Friedrichshafen in Germany. This optimization algorithm is a core component used in the ZF Eco Control 4 ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) distance control system.

According to a press release, in order to reduce the energy requirements of electric vehicles, Embotech’s algorithm evaluates map information such as uphill and downhill gradients and curves, as well as in-vehicle information about the optimal operating points of the powertrain. This helps to achieve an optimal driving strategy, which in turn enables the range of electric vehicles to be increased by as much as 8 percent.

According to the information, the competencies of ZF and Embotech complement each other nicely in this regard: While ZF can provide the relevant data for the assistance system and control acceleration and braking on the basis of its system understanding of the entire vehicle, Embotech contributes profound expertise regarding the appropriate algorithms for real-time evaluation of this data and its embedded solutions.

The function can simply be integrated as a software add-on in existing series ACCs of both electric passenger cars and commercial vehicles, irrespective of the type of powertrain. “Eco Control 4 ACC is a ground-breaking development that brings us a significant step closer to Vision Zero emissions”, explains Uwe Class, Vice President Advanced Systems Development at ZF, in the press release.

“The saving potential of up to eight percent with ‘just a piece of code’ is a giant step forward to revolutionize greener mobility and transportation”, comments Alexander Domahidi, CTO and co-founder of Embotech. ce/mm
