The QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024 show that the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) is the second-best university in Europe. This is the first ranking list by QS focusing on Europe and it assesses the services of 688 universities across twelve categories. The University of Oxford placed above Zurich, with six other UK universities in the top 10: Imperial College London, UCL Bloomsbury, the University of Cambridge, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Manchester, and King's College London. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) came in ninth place.
There are five other Swiss universities in the ranking’s top 100: the University of Zurich (35), the University of Geneva (60), the University of Basel (73), the University of Bern (76), and the University of Lausanne (98). Università della Svizzera italiana came in place 229, the University of Freiburg in place 247, the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland in place 421, and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in place 496.
The University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Imperial College London are among the institutes achieving the maximum score of 100 in the categories of academic reputation, employer reputation, and international research network. The University of Edinburgh is the only institute to have received 100 points in the sustainability index. The press release from QS also highlights the high scores for ETH in the category of citations per paper (99.8) and EPFL in the category of international faculty (100).
