Zürich/Löwen - The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) will join the League of European Research Universities with effect from January 1, 2024. Given that ETH Zurich remains barred from the European research program Horizon Europe, it regards such cooperations as more important than ever.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) is set to join the League of European Research Universities (LERU) with effect from January 1, 2024. LERU is a lobbyist for the important role played by its members in the research, innovation and education landscape of the European Union (EU) and regularly expresses its view on related political topics.

At present, the LERU network is made up of a total of 23 associate institutions from Dublin to Munich and Helsinki to Barcelona. The University of Zurich (UZH) and University of Geneva in Switzerland are both already members as well.

“I am delighted that the leading research university ETH Zurich is joining the LERU network. LERU plays a really important role in standing up for research, innovation and education across Europe and beyond. With ETH Zurich, we will be even stronger in realizing our collective ambitions”, explains Linda Doyle, LERU Chair and Provost of Trinity College Dublin, in a press release issued by ETH Zurich.

“Together with like-minded universities, ETH Zurich seeks to serve society and strengthen the European academic landscape”, comments Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich, in the press release, before adding: “LERU stands for values that we share. It is an important voice for research and education in Europe”.

ETH Zurich joins the network at a time when it remains barred from the Horizon Europe research program. As such, ETH Zurich writes, it is “more important than ever” for the university to join forces with partner universities across Europe. ce/mm
