The US internet corporation Google has its sights set on further growth in Zurich. It has rented a new building at Müllerstrasse 16/20 from the real estate development firm Swiss Prime Site. The office building is located near to Zurich Central Station and covers a total area of 15,000 square meters, as detailed by Swiss Prime Site in a press release. The building is to be fully renovated this summer, with Google set to move in as sole tenants from 2023.
“The property's central location and its proximity to our other sites in Zurich, were the winning arguments for us and our employees”, comments Lucas Stolwijk, EMEA Regional Workplace Services Manager at Google Switzerland, in the press release. “We are looking forward to investing further in Zurich and to strengthening our cooperation with local partners in the domestic innovation ecosystem”, he adds.
Google has been present in Switzerland for around 17 years now. In fact, the country is home to Google’s largest development center outside of the USA. In 2019, the corporation moved into its new Swiss headquarters located at Europaallee. Another section of the workforce is also employed at the Google Hürlimann Campus in Zurich.
Google Switzerland participates in the development of internet services such as search functionality, Google Assistant, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube, among other aspects. However, the Zurich-based team also researches issues including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and is working on the development of technologies for data protection.
“In recent years, Switzerland and Zurich in particular have developed greatly in the field of internet technology to become a true European hub”, explains Martin Kaleja, CEO Swiss Prime Site Immobilien.
