Google is expanding its Google Cloud Platform (GCP) with a new location. As Google manager Urs Hölzle announced in a blog post, the internet giant has settled on Zurich: “Switzerland is a country famous for pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and banking, and its central location in Europe makes it an attraction location for a cloud.”
The Swiss region will open in the first half of 2019. Customers in Switzerland will benefit from lower latency for their cloud-based workloads and data, explained Hölzle. It will also be easier for businesses to build highly available, high-performance applications. Google will launch three zones to protect against service disruptions.
The Swiss region brings the total number of existing and announced GCP regions around the world with 20. Zurich is its sixth region in Europe.
Google has another office in Zurich, where it now has more than 2,000 employees. Zurich is the largest Google development centre outside of the U.S.
