Chur – The canton of Graubünden plans to provide an improved ultra-high-speed broadband service regionwide to support SMEs, tourism and innovation.

The move to install ultra-high-speed broadband across the canton of Graubünden will make it a frontrunner in Switzerland, explained the canton’s Department of Economy and Social Affairs (DVS).

DVS is working with the Economic Development and Tourism Agency (AWT) and experts to install faster internet across the canton. In a first step, the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Chur analyzed the state of broadband access in Graubünden.

With the findings showing that the canton lags behind in terms of ultra-high-speed broadband access, Graubünden is installing the service in all its regions, according to DVS.

The groundwork is being laid out by AWT and will serve as the “basis for developing a promotion strategy to encourage action in the regional economy”.

Because the primary aim is to match the increasing needs of SMEs and tourism businesses with high quality internet access, one focus of the development will be SMEs’ data-intensive use. There are also plans to close any supply gaps.
