Grensol is building a pilot plant for the recycling of waste from scrap cars in an existing commercial building at the Papieri site of HIAG in Biberist in the canton of Solothurn, Switzerland, according to a press release issued by HIAG. Grensol, which is itself headquartered in Thalwil in the canton of Zurich, specializes in the carbon-neutral recycling of non-recyclable waste such as polymer compounds. To this end, the start-up, which was founded in 2021, uses a technology that functions on the basis of high-intensity light to convert mixed plastic waste into resources such as hydrogen, carbon black, metal or glass.
Waste that would otherwise have to be incinerated or disposed of in a landfill site, in turn producing pollutants, can now be returned to the circular economy. The high-intensity light required for this process is generated by Grensol on the basis of renewable energy.
Grensol was recognized for its approach and named the winner of the W.A. de Vigier Prize on June 19. This is the oldest and most lucrative award for young entrepreneurs in Switzerland, with the victorious companies banking 100,000 Swiss francs each. For this year’s promotional prize, the W.A.
