Rotkreuz - The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) is expanding the services offered via its “eBanking – but secure!” information platform. The platform now includes a game that allows banks and other businesses to raise awareness of the threat posed by hacker attacks among their workforce.

The number of hacker attacks on Swiss businesses is on the rise. Cyber-security experts from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) have therefore teamed up with the Düsseldorf-based games developer Fabula Games to produce a game that aims to raise employee awareness of this danger.

To achieve this, the team of developers led by Oliver Hirschi, a lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at HSLU, based in Rotkreuz in the canton of Zug, deliberately opted for an interactive approach, further details of which can be found in a press release issued by the university. The game leads players through an office-based scenario, in which the business has been targeted by cyber-criminals. Players are tasked with rapidly uncovering the attack and responding to this threat appropriately. At the end of the game, they receive a personalized score and further information in connection with the dangers of hacking attacks.

The game is available to play free of charge via the “eBanking – but secure!” (EBAS) platform. HSLU operates this information platform for banks and other enterprises. “Humans provide the biggest gateway for ransomware attacks, and that is one of the aspects where we have to start”, as Oliver Hirschi, Head of EBAS, explains in the press release, before adding: “Nowadays, such attacks are undertaken in a very professional manner – and to recognize them is becoming an ever-larger challenge. Employees therefore need to be better sensitized and trained in this regard”. ce/stk
