The jury of the World Space Week Association has selected the winner of the Leading Innovation in Space Award 2024: Sirin Orbital Systems based in Zurich, Switzerland. The association focuses its activities on World Space Week, which was declared by the United Nations and is held from October 4 to 10 every year. According to the bid invitation with the theme “Space & Climate Change”, it was looking for companies exemplifying the “critical role” of the space industry in combatting climate change.
A press release from the World Space Week Association regarding the jury’s decision had the following to say about Sirin Orbital Systems: “Their work in space-based solar power (SBSP), sustainable propulsion systems, and on-orbit servicing is driving space technology towards a greener future.” Sirin Orbital Systems states that the innovations of more than 100 companies from across the world were assessed on the basis of six criteria: the novelty of the technology, cross-sector innovation, scalability, global impact, collaborative partnerships, and sustainability with a long-term vision.
The company reportedly feels “truly honored” for its technologies to have been selected. This is despite the fact that the list of the final 25 nominees featured such significant companies as Airbus, Arianespace, Thales Alenia Space, and Mitsubishi Corporation. However, Sirin Orbital Systems shares a quote from the jury stating that "the company’s potential to revolutionize global energy systems and focus on sustainability makes them the strongest contender". ce/mm
