Switzerland can be regarded as one of the world’s Innovation Champions. This is a finding from the International Innovation Scorecard 2023 from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). The largest association for the US technology industry is also responsible for organizing the leading trade fair for consumer electronics, CES, which is taking place in Las Vegas up to January 8.
According to a press release issued by the CTA, 70 countries were evaluated using 40 indicators across 17 different categories, including tax friendliness, environmental quality, trade policy, broadband access and cybersecurity. In total, 24 countries were awarded the status of Innovation Champion. Alongside Switzerland, these were Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the USA, as well as the European Union (EU).
In Switzerland’s favor, the authors cite a high degree of freedom and good scores in the categories of diversity and human capital. In addition, the country is characterized by its investments in research and development amounting to 3.2 percent of GDP and low corporate tax rates. Switzerland has made great strides in drone operations and low-altitude airspace management. The adoption of the EU drone regulations on January 1, 2023 is also regarded as being to Switzerland’s benefit.
However, according to the information, Switzerland could improve its score for entrepreneurial activity by encouraging more business start-ups and enabling the testing and operation of self-driving vehicles. mm
