The Zurich startup ANYbotics has won a prize at this year’s International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), which held a competition for robotics startup companies. Its winning design was the ANYmal robot.
ANYmal is a four-legged robot that can move across rough terrain, as demonstrated in a video that depicts it climbing snow-covered steps and crossing sandy beaches. Able to work with people or independently, the robot has already proved itself in a project run by the French oil company Total that examined how robots handle multi-level offshore oil platforms.
At the Australian competition, ANYbotics went up against nine other startup companies. As a winner, the Zurich startup has secured around 2,000 euros prize money and the opportunity for investment totaling 250,000 dollars from the Robotics Hub Fund.
ANYbotics was founded in 2016 as a spinoff from the Robotic Systems Lab (RSL) at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). It previously received a grant from ESA BIC Switzerland, which supports startup companies in the field of space technology and applications.
