VirtaMed, a company based in Schlieren that specializes in medical simulation training, is presenting a new module for its arthroscopic simulator, VirtaMed ArthroS, in the USA. According to a press release, VirtaMed will present the ArthroS Knee, its latest surgical training knee module, at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in Chicago from March 22-26, 2022.
This new training module will be available from VirtaMed in two different skin tones for the very first time. Raimundo Sierra, Founder and CEO of VirtaMed, states that it is important to learn medical skills in a realistic environment, adding: “That means training on simulators that reflect the diversity of both patients and trainee physicians”.
According to the press release from VirtaMed, a report published in 2005 by the Institute of Medicine states that “racial and ethnic minorities receive lower-quality health care than white people - even when insurance status, income, age and severity of conditions are comparable”. According to this, people of color are less likely to receive effective treatments. This is said to be due in part to implicit bias from healthcare providers.
Sierra further adds: “We are committed to encouraging diversity and inclusion in the education of medical skills, and we believe these values should also be reflected in the simulator hardware.”
VirtaMed’s headquarters are located at the IJZ Innovation and Startup Center in Schlieren and is a member of Start Smart Schlieren.
