Zurich/Oxford - Nanoflex Robotics from the Greater Zurich Area and Brainomix, based in Oxford in the UK, are joining forces for the development of remote vascular interventions on stroke patients. To this end, Nanoflex Robotics will receive a sum of 400,000 Swiss francs from Innosuisse, with 400,000 pounds sterling awarded to Brainomix by Innovate UK.

Nanoflex Robotics and Brainomix, a spin-off from Oxford University, will benefit from financial support awarded within the framework of the bilateral cooperation program “UK – Switzerland Bilateral: Collaborative R&D”. Nanoflex Robotics, founded in 2021 as a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), is set to receive funding of 400,000 Swiss francs from Innosuisse, the Swiss innovation agency, with Brainomix set to bank 400,000 pounds sterling (438,000 Swiss francs) from the UK innovation agency Innovate UK.

Starting in 2024, the two companies will join forces to develop an AI-assisted magnetic navigation system for robotic surgical tools. The project aims to leverage the benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize the state-of-the-art magnetic robotic navigation system developed by Nanoflex Robotics for the world’s first remote-controlled application for the surgical removal of a blood clot from a blood vessel (thrombectomy), as Dr. George Harston, Chief Medical & Innovation Officer at Brainomix, explains in a press release. This should help by “transforming stroke treatment options and helping improve outcomes for patients”, he concludes.

Christophe Chautems, co-founder and CTO of Nanoflex Robotics, highlights the vitally important time factor: “By enabling increased and earlier access to mechanical thrombectomies through our remote robotics platform, we hope to give more people a greater chance to live independent lives after stroke”. ce/mm
