Chiasso/Bern - SBB, Swiss Federal Railways, has put its renovated cargo workshop in Chiasso into operation. The project took 18 months to complete, with the Swiss national railway company investing more than 12 million Swiss francs in the renovation. By expanding and modernizing the facility, SBB will be able to accelerate maintenance and servicing of locomotives and freight wagons.

On November 3, SBB officially opened its renovated SBB cargo workshop in Chiasso in the canton of Ticino following an 18-month refurbishment and a total investment of more than 12 million Swiss francs. The new workshop was constructed on the site of the old facility, which after 60 years in service no longer complied with modern requirements.

Covering a total area of 2,000 square meters, the new workshop is longer and wider than the previous facility, further details of which can be found in a press release. Moreover, there is now an additional fourth track in the form of the reprofiling line. A total of 30 staff will be employed at the new cargo workshop.

SBB describes the underfloor lathe as a “highlight” of the new workshop. According to the press release, SBB Cargo is therefore creating “a one-stop shop for reprofiling locomotives, freight wagons and multiple units”, which can be returned to operations with a time saving of around 30 percent by efficiently completing all of the reprofiling work at a single location.

The new workshop will not only service SBB Cargo vehicles and those from third parties active in the area of freight transport; TILO trains used by SBB and Trenord, which connect the canton of Ticino with the northern Italian region of Lombardy, also stand to benefit from these services. ce/mm
