Amprion has commissioned Hitachi Energy to deliver four converter stations for two high-voltage direct current (HVDC) links, according to a joint press release issued by the two companies. Moreover, the Zurich-based technology company that specializes in the energy sector will provide service solutions for the Korridor B project, for which wind energy from the North Sea coast is transported to the Ruhr Region in Germany. The financial value of this contract is put at more than 2 billion euros in the press release.
Korridor B comprises two underground cable connections, each with a capacity of 2 gigawatts. If required, the transmission capacity can be doubled by way of additionally laid empty lines. “The project will transport green electricity to millions of households and industry in North Rhine-Westphalia from as early as the beginning of the 2030s”, comments Amprion CTO Hendrik Neumann in the press release, adding that: “We are delighted to have Hitachi Energy at our side as a reliable partner who will support us in the efficient implementation of the project”.
The contract between Hitachi Energy and the German transmission system operator includes, among other aspects, the delivery and installation of two HVDC Light converter systems, as Hitachi Energy states in the press release. The converters operate at 525 kilovolts, which is the standard for the latest generation of HVDC links. Both converter stations are scheduled to go into operation at the beginning of the next decade. ce/hs
