As part of a financing round, Scewo AG has raised 9.2 million Swiss francs in Series A extension funding. The lead investor for this round was the German venture capital firm RSBG Ventures, further details of which can be found in a press release.
Scewo has developed an electric wheelchair with the ability to climb stairs, among other functionalities. To achieve this, the wheelchair comes with two large wheels in addition to extendable tracks, while the seat level can also be raised when the wheelchair is stationary. As such, users of the wheelchair are able to have conversations with other people practically at eye level.
With this fresh capital, Scewo is seeking to prepare the ground for entry onto the US market. The first step in this context would be attaining FDA approval.
The start-up is continuing its expansion abroad on the basis of these plans. It was only in the fourth quarter of 2023 that Scewo launched its wheelchair in France, with the start-up having already been active in the markets of the German-speaking DACH countries.
Scewo was founded in 2017 as a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). In April 2023, the start-up headquartered in Winterthur opened its own production facility that, according to information from the company itself, has the capacity to produce several hundred of the wheelchairs per year. ce/ssp
