Schaffhausen – The canton of Schaffhausen is planning to provide financial backing of 3 million Swiss francs to the new Schaffhausen Institute of Technology over the next few years. It has identified huge potential in the university, whose aims include bringing ICT experts in the region and supporting start-ups.

The canton of Schaffhausen will be financially supporting the next project steps of the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology (SIT). This was confirmed by the canton during the Insights in Technology Conference, which was organized by the SIT in Schaffhausen. In line with 2020 budget plans, the canton will be providing support to the SIT the tune of 3 million Swiss francs overall, the university explained in a press release.

“Schaffhausen could stand to benefit from the educational, research and innovative capacity of the SIT to a great extent”, commented Christian Amsler, member of the Schaffhausen Cantonal Government. “The SIT would train new experts from our region in the area of ICT, facilitate technology transfers between the university and industry and support the establishment of start-ups in the SIT Tech Park”.

The SIT was founded in 2019 and focuses on selected areas of computer and software sciences. The university has already launched initial degree courses, which are being held at partner universities until the SIT is able to move into its own building.

According to the press release, the SIT has also started to expand its management team. Moreover, it has established a board of advisors to which it has appointed several renowned international scientists. These include, for example, Konstantin Novoselov, Nobel Prize winner for Physics and Professor at the National University of Singapore.
