Smith+Nephew is a British multinational medical equipment manufacturing company. Doctors will now be able to try out its instruments before using them in an actual operation. To enable this, Smith+Nephew has joined forces with VirtaMed from Schlieren, as was reported in a press release.
In this partnership, Smith+Nephew’s surgical instruments will be adapted and incorporated into VirtaMed’s simulation modules. Doctors will be able to use these training programs to practice procedures on the knee, shoulder or hip, for example. The training simulator also enables advanced surgical techniques such as rotator cuff repair and meniscal repairs. The simulators will be accessible via VirtaMed’s cloud-based simulation management platform, allowing doctors to continue their training online.
According to Smith+Nephew, VirtaMed offers “the most sophisticated simulation solution” with the unique ability to be adapted to different devices. Within their partnership, the companies will also be developing new simulation modules, which will combine anatomically correct models with photorealistic virtual reality simulation.
VirtaMed was spun out from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) in 2007 and is based in the Innovations- und Jungunternehmerzentrum (IJZ; innovation and startup center) in Schlieren.
