On a visit to the canton of Uri - a dynamic center for business and innovation, nestled in picturesque landscapes and mountains - we meet Evelin Walker and Mario Epp, both project managers at the Office for Economy and Public Transport at the canton of Uri. Our conversation centers on the Start-up Weekend Uri, which will be held again in September. The application phase is currently underway.
Mario Epp, the Start-up Weekend Uri seems to be a real highlight for young entrepreneurs. Can you explain what makes this event so special?
"Of course. Imagine starting the day with a kayak trip on Lake Lucerne and then brainstorming new business ideas in a co-working space with a view of the Alps. This is Uri! Our Start-up Weekend offers a unique mix of an intensive workshop program and impressive leisure opportunities right on the doorstep. This combination of nature, leisure and work is what makes the weekend so special and attracts creative minds who want to drive their projects forward."
Sounds like a perfect balance! Evelin Walker, how does this atmosphere contribute to the success of the Start-up Weekend Uri?
"Nature here is not just a backdrop, but part of the creative process. We have found that participants often come up with the best ideas when they are in a relaxed and inspiring environment. We also offer professional support from experienced coaches. This overall package not only promotes individual creativity, but also creates an atmosphere in which everyone is open to new perspectives and collaborations."
How does the canton of Uri fit into the picture of the Greater Zurich Area as an innovation hub?
"With new infrastructure, public transport routes, and international investments, the development of the canton of Uri has taken on a new dynamic. Population and jobs are growing constantly. What's more, our location and available resources are ideal for promoting innovation and attracting talent," Mario explains. Evelin adds: "We also attach great importance to fostering a supportive community. International companies expanding here not only benefit from a dynamic start-up scene but also from a lifestyle that balances work and leisure. And the same goes for local companies."
How do you utilize Uri's geographic location to attract both local and international entrepreneurs?
"Uri is the gateway to the south and therefore a hub for business people traveling to Switzerland and further into Europe. The short distances allow entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas quickly and efficiently. With events like the Start-up Weekend, we leverage this strategic position to build a bridge between local innovators and international opportunities. We offer a platform for local talent and beyond," says Evelin.
