Synergy Health operates two industrial plants in Däniken that, to put it simply, according to CEO Hans Hartmann, function like baggage control at airports. There is a crucial difference, however: Synergy Health’s plants clean products for MedTech companies.
“We use both gamma and X-ray equipment to kill bacteria on the devices,” explained Hartmann in an article published by Solothurn Economic Development Agency. The rays are so intensive that implants or syringes can be cleaned even while in their original packaging.
Synergy Health’s gamma irradiation plant launched operations in 1991, with the X-ray plant following in 2011, according to the article. “It is the world’s first X-ray sterilization plant for industrial use,” said Hartmann.
Developed by the company itself, the X-ray method does not deploy radioactive cobalt, unlike the gamma rays option. It also delivers better results, with STERIS, Synergy Health’s parent company, now planning to roll out the technology in Europe.
Hartmann praised Däniken, where his company is based, highlighting the benefits of the well-connected central location and the region’s MedTech cluster. “We benefit from our geographical proximity to a high density of producers and suppliers in the MedTech field,” he said. Synergy Health’s customers include DePuy Synthes, Mathys, Stryker, Straumann and Ypsomed.
