The Zurich-based company Voliro and Constellation Clearsight, headquartered in De Pere in the US State of Wisconsin, are to deploy highly maneuverable inspection drones on the North American utilities market. Voliro is a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) and a project from Wyss Zurich, the joint accelerator platform from ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich.

The Voliro T flying robot developed by Voliro boasts six degrees of freedom, meaning that it has no restrictions in terms of changing position and that it is able to touch objects at any angle. According to a press release, Clearsight will be able to further expand activities in the area of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) with this “unique 360-degree drone”, as Voliro describes it. Moreover, Clearsight customers stand to benefit from Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Dry-Film Thickness (DFT) measurements thanks to the innovative airborne robot. According to so Jimmy Carter, General Manager of Clearsight, the Voliro T “will provide customers with actionable insights about the structural integrity of their equipment without risking the safety of a human inspector”.

“Constellation Clearsight presents us with an incredible opportunity”, explains Voliro CEO Mina Kamel in the press release, adding that: “Their qualified experts have the knowledge, resources and physical assets to offer solutions to plant owners to perform inspections faster and safer than before”.
