Dübendorf/Zurich – Swiss direct insurer smile.direct and insurtech company mitipi have won the DIA Diamond Award. Mitipi developed a device for detecting burglars, smile.direct offers a corresponding insurance solution.

More than 50 startups from the insurance sector applied for the DIA Diamond Award, which is presented at Digital Insurance Agenda, one of the largest digital insurance events in the world. In the end, the prize for the best insurtech solution went to a security subscription offered jointly by the Swiss direct insurer smile.direct and the Zurich-based insurtech company mitipi.

Launched in March, the subscription includes a device called Kevin, which was developed by mitipi. Kevin simulates the presence of residents in a house or apartment to deter burglars. Smile.direct offers mitipi customers homeowner’s insurance, including comprehensive coverage for household contents.

Mitipi founder and CEO Julian Stylianou is pleased by the rapid international success and accepted the prize in person in Amsterdam on behalf of both companies. “We were able to establish exciting international contacts in Amsterdam, which will help drive further growth in the coming months,” said Stylianou.

Smile.direct regards the prize as an affirmation of its strategy of focusing on digital solutions. “The collaboration with mitipi is a good example of how we can integrate our existing insurtech solutions into existing ecosystems,” said CEO Pierangelo Campopiano.

Based on Dübendorf in the Greater Zurich Area, smile.direct was founded in 1994 and now has over 130,000 customers. It belongs to Swiss insurer Helvetia, which also founded mitipi as a startup in Zurich in 2018.
