Zurich – The new QS ranking shows that the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) has the best range of earth sciences courses worldwide. The École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) also impressed in several subjects. The École Hôtelière de Lausanne has the best range of courses for hospitality in the world.

The British higher education consulting group Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) regularly publishes global comparisons of universities. A new ranking has now been published on the various subjects offered at higher education institutes, with several Swiss courses taking top places in this.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) is represented as one of the ten best higher education institutes in 13 subjects. This is the best rating in mainland Europe. The ETH earth sciences course has been the best subject in the earth and marine sciences category globally for five years. The ETH has moved up two places in the statistics & operational research category, gaining second place. ETH President Joël Mesot stated in a press release: “The result shows that the ETH’s strong position depends on a broad basis of scientific excellence.”

It is not just the courses of the ETH that are at the top of the ranking.  The École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is also in the top ten for seven subjects. The best among them is materials science, where it takes seventh place.

Swiss universities also excel in hospitality. According to the ranking, the École Hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL) offers the best course in hospitality and leisure management in the world. The Les Roches International School of Hotel Management and the Glion Institute of Higher Education share third place. The SHMS Swiss Hotel Management School takes fifth place.

Overall, Swiss higher education institutes occupy 26 top-ten places in the ranking. According to the ETH, this is more than Germany, Italy or Spain, which have significantly more universities in the running. Ben Sowter, Head of Research at QS states: “No country from continental Europe has a higher density of global leading research departments.” He goes on to say that Switzerland is an exemplary environment for research, adding: “This involves close links with innovative industries, a strong will, recruiting foreign talent, and generous investments in research and development.” ssp
