Zurich – Climeworks has developed technology that captures carbon dioxide directly from the air. As part of its commitment to tackle climate change, the Canadian software company Shopify will be supporting the technology startup from the Greater Zurich Area.

Climeworks chosen by Shopify

With the technology developed by Climeworks, carbon dioxide can be filtered out of the air directly using clean, renewable energy. This innovation has already been tested and used in various applications. The Karlsruhe Institute for Technology, for example, converts carbon dioxide that Climeworks has captured from air into carbon black, a raw material for high-tech applications In another collaboration with Lufthansa, carbon dioxide extracted from the atmosphere is being converted into a synthesis gas that can be used to produce jet fuel.

Now Climeworks has also signed up Shopify to its carbon dioxide removal program, as was reported in a press release. The software company, which offers a platform for online retailers, is purchasing storage for atmospheric carbon dioxide. This will enable Climeworks to store air-captured carbon dioxide safely and permanently. Shopify is making this investment via its Sustainability Fund, through which the company commits to give at least US$5 million annually to technologies and projects fighting climate change.

Climeworks was founded as a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) and has its headquarters in Zurich. The company’s vision is to inspire one billion people to act now and remove carbon dioxide from the air. In September, the startup successfully completed a funding round, raising 100 million Swiss francs.
