According to an article from ticino online, voltWALL is the main winner from this year’s Boldbrain Startup Challenge. The Lugano-based start-up, which has offices in New York, Rome, Sydney and Tel Aviv has developed a modular energy storage system by the name of xBlade. The areas of application for this product range from charging electric vehicles in a garage all the way through to industrial solutions and solar parks.

The company was not least able to convince the jury of the Ticino start-up competition of its plans to create jobs within the canton, an article published by startupticker.ch states. First prize comes with a check for 40,000 Swiss francs. Moreover, the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI; University of Italian Switzerland) has awarded voltWALL a full scholarship worth 52,000 Swiss francs, while the winners also secured the special prize handed out by the Boldbrain sponsor Hemargroup.

Second and third place went to the two start-ups Finar Module Tech and 4Devices Medical respectively, with each banking a sum of 30,000 Swiss francs. Finar developed an energy-saving LED lamp, which has already undergone testing by Osram and Henkel. 4Devices constructs miniature machines for medical application. Its first product is a stent that aims to improve surgical interventions on children suffering from hydrocephalus. Fourth and fifth place, each receiving a check for 10,000 Swiss francs, went to WYTH and UNIVERSUS-OS respectively, while the latter was also voted as the winner of the public prize.

The Boldbrain Startup Challenge is organised by Fondazione Agire, which is the innovation agency for the canton of Ticino, and the Start-up Promotion Center at the USI. The competition is supported by the Ministry for Finance and the Economy and BancaStato, which is the cantonal bank of Ticino.
