The most recent issue of the QS World University Rankings by Subject from the international university analyst Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) once again attests to the excellence of Switzerland’s academic studies on an international level. The data collected for 2024 regarding the performance of 220 subjects at 27 Swiss universities shows that almost half of the Swiss subjects (107) are represented in the global top 100. This includes 31 in the top 10. Only the USA and the UK have exceeded this result.
Furthermore, Switzerland boasts 30 entries in the five broad subject areas of Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management. In comparison, Germany has 138 entries while Austria has 21. Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President at QS, commented in a press release: “Switzerland’s successes in this ranking are due to international collaboration and an emphasis on the connection between education, industry, and entrepreneurship.”
The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich is the strongest institute in Switzerland with 29 subjects in total: 27 of these are listed in the top 100 and 17 in the top 10 in the world. As with previous years, it is number one in the world for the subjects of Earth and Marine Sciences, Geology, and Geophysics.
The University of Bern and the University of Zurich excel in Dentistry in particular, taking 6th and 8th place. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne features in the top 10 for the subjects of Engineering – Electrical and Electronic (7), Chemistry (9), Engineering – Chemical (10), Engineering and Technology (10), and Materials Science (10).
Switzerland is the undisputed leader when it comes to education in the subject Hospitality and Leisure Management: Lausanne’s EHL Hospitality Business School comes in first place, closely followed by SHMS – Swiss Hotel Management School (2), César Ritz Colleges Switzerland (3), Les Roches Global Hospitality Management Education (5), the Hotel Institute Montreux (6), the Culinary Arts Academy Switzerland (7), and the Glion Institute of Higher Education (8).
