The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) has taken 11th place in the Times Higher Education (THE) World UniversityRankings for the third consecutive year, according to a press release. ETH Zurich remains the highest-ranked university in Switzerland and outside the Anglo-American sphere. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) has moved up one place to 32.
The top ten positions in the THE rankings are all occupied by universities from the Anglo-American sphere. The University of Oxford is in first place, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Harvard.
Of the other Swiss universities in the rankings up to 1000, the University of Bern is at 116, the University of Basel at 123, the University of Lausanne at 143 and the University of Geneva at 183. The Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano falls within the 251 to 300 range, while the University of St.Gallen, University of Freiburg, University of Neuchâtel and Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) rank between 300 and 1000.
According to the ETH press release, the rankings are compiled on the basis of quantitative data collection and surveys of the universities’ reputations. Points are awarded for five different aspects, including teaching and quality of research. The press release explains that individual ratings are weighted and combined to produce an overall score. In the latest rankings, ETH scored 93 out of 100 possible points, while the first-placed University of Oxford received 98.5 points. In its press release, ETH Zurich says that the THE rankings particularly recognized its research conditions and the quality of its research, while indicating a need to improve knowledge transfer to industry. ce/gba
