Why Taiho Oncology Europe to establish its European clinical development and commercial headquarter in the Greater Zurich Area

Taiho Oncology Europe selected the Greater Zurich Area because it offers an environment in which the company can grow its European business while staying true to its corporate philosophy and long-term values. Four factors were particularly important in its decision.

  1. Access to outstanding Life Science talent
The Greater Zurich Area has a deep pool of highly skilled professionals, enabling the company to establish its business from the ground up, to a high standard within a short period of time.
  2. Transparency and stability for long-term value creation
Switzerland’s high level of political and economic stability and regulatory transparency provides an ideal environment for realizing Taiho’s long-term approach to value creation. It enables the company to build a European presence that looks ahead for the long-term, rather than focusing on short-term results.
  3. A mature ecosystem built on collaboration and trust
The region provides a fertile environment for constructive collaboration with experts across multiple disciplines. The region’s strong emphasis on trust, cooperation, and transparency was another important factor in Taiho Oncology Europe's location decision.
  4. Supportive and responsive guidance
From the establishment of Taiho Oncology Europe to building local networks and coordinating operations, the timely and attentive support provided by the Canton of Zug and the Greater Zurich Area greatly accelerated the successful establishment of our European base – even during the COVID-19 pandemic – while we were operating remotely from home office.

Interview with Taiho Oncology Europe

Taiho Oncology Europe serves as the European clinical development and commercial hub of Taiho Pharmaceutical, a Japan-based pharmaceutical company. We spoke with the team about its mission, its decision to establish operations in the Greater Zurich Area, and its plans for the future.

Science with purpose

We spoke with Taiho Oncology Europe about its mission, scientific approach, and the values that guide its work to improve the lives of patients with cancer.

1. Could you tell us a bit about Taiho Oncology, its mission, and scientific excellence

At Taiho Oncology Europe, our mission is simple and deeply ambitious: to improve the lives of patients with cancer through innovative, science-driven therapies. Rooted in a strong Japanese heritage and guided by long-term thinking, we focus on areas of high unmet medical need. Our work is grounded in scientific excellence, from early research through to clinical development and commercialization.

We believe that true innovation comes not only from breakthrough science, but from collaboration, discipline, and a deep respect for patients. Since its founding more than 60 years ago, Taiho Pharmaceutical has pursued innovative oncology drug development under its corporate philosophy:

“We strive to improve human health and contribute to a society enriched by smiles.”

Establishing a European hub

Taiho Oncology Europe explains why the Greater Zurich Area became the location of its European headquarters and reflects on its experience building operations in the region.

2. Taiho Oncology expanded operations to Greater Zurich to create a clinical research and commercial base for pharmaceutical business in Europe – How and why did you choose Greater Zurich, and what was the settlement process like?

The Greater Zurich Area offers something very few places in the world can: a unique concentration of scientific excellence, global connectivity, and stability. For Taiho Oncology, establishing our European base here in Europe was a deliberate strategic choice. Switzerland sits at the heart of Europe, both geographically and in terms of life sciences innovation. The proximity to leading academic institutions, innovative biotech companies, and regulatory bodies such as Swissmedic creates a unique life sciences ecosystem. It provides access to specialized talent, fosters scientific collaboration and knowledge exchange, and supports the development and commercialization of innovative therapies. This makes it an ideal environment to build a strong clinical research and commercial presence.

3. What has been the biggest learning since you started in Greater Zurich?

One of the biggest learnings has been just how interconnected and collaborative the Swiss life sciences ecosystem is. There is a strong sense of partnership between industry, academia, and public institutions. This creates an environment where ideas move faster, and where meaningful collaborations can form organically.

4. What has been the biggest surprise?

What truly stood out is the quality and mindset of talent. Beyond expertise, there is a strong sense of ownership, precision, and accountability. Teams here combine global experience with a very pragmatic, solution-oriented approach – something that aligns perfectly with Taiho’s culture.

5. Can you share one thing that has been easier than expected about this strategic move

Building a high-caliber team. In many markets, scaling a specialized life sciences team can take significant time. In the Greater Zurich Area, access to experienced, international talent has made this process faster and more efficient than anticipated.

Swiss Precision, Japanese Heritage

From attracting international talent to building local partnerships, the company shares how Greater Zurich's collaborative life sciences ecosystem supports its long-term vision.

6. What is the one thing about the local environment that you are most excited to leverage and how?

We are excited to leverage the synergy between the local "Swiss precision" and our own unique corporate culture. At Taiho, we operate with a special blend of Japanese heritage and global agility. Our culture is defined by a "long-term view" – we are looking at the next decade of patient care. The Greater Zurich Area shares this appreciation for stability and quality. This alignment allows us to build a team that is deeply committed to the excellence required to bring complex oncology treatments to market.

7. If you had to name one local partnership you were able to establish within the local life science ecosystem, which one is it? Or which one would you wish for?

The standout partnership for us is undoubtedly our relationship with Araris Biotech AG. Araris is a brilliant spin-off from the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and ETH Zurich, specializing in next-generation antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). What began as a research collaboration between Taiho Pharmaceutical and Araris Biotech in late 2023 evolved into a full partnership in 2025. This partnership is a perfect success story for the Greater Zurich ecosystem: it bridges world-class Swiss bio-engineering with Taiho’s deep clinical and commercial oncology expertise. By keeping Araris’ operations here in the region, we are able to maintain our startup-like mentality while backing it with the global resources of Taiho.

Looking Ahead

As Taiho Oncology Europe continues to expand its European footprint, the company remains focused on scientific excellence, long-term value creation, and meaningful impact for patients.

8. What are you willing to share about Taiho Oncology’s plans for the upcoming year?

Looking ahead, we will be building with heart and heritage. The coming year is about building with intent and scale. While we strengthen our European footprint and continue expanding our clinical research capabilities, we will also continue investing in the culture that enables our people to deliver meaningful outcomes for patients.

We are in a rare position: we have the stability and wisdom of a 60-year Japanese heritage, yet we operate in Europe with a vibrant start-up mindset. This creates an environment where people don’t just come to work; they come to build something they truly believe in.

We are looking for people who want to "own" their roles – entrepreneurial spirits who are deeply committed to the company and our shared mission. At Taiho, accountability, collaboration, and trust are the foundation of a team that truly loves what they do. Ultimately, our goal is to establish a European organization that is operationally strong, deeply human, and connected to the scientific and patient communities we serve.
