Smartflyer AG is developing a four-seater aircraft with a hybrid powertrain that can achieve cruising speeds of 222 kilometers per hour and has a range of 920 kilometers. The aircraft is being produced in Grenchen in the canton of Solothurn.
CEO Rolf Stuber is hoping to turn Grenchen into a center of electric aviation in Europe. To help achieve this, the third smartflyer-challenge in European electric aviation will take place at Grenchen Airport from September 13-14.
Electric and hybrid aircrafts will be showcased on the ground as well as in the air. Participating in the competition from Switzerland are Ruppert Composite GmbH from Wald in the canton of Zurich, Alpin Air Planes from Fribourg and Evolaris from Bern. Germany is represented with Flugsport Toni Roth GmbH, Lange Aviation GmbH and AtlasAero GmbH. Two companies from the Czech Republic, Phoenix Air and ULTRALIGHT DESIGN s.r.o., and LAK from Lithuania are also participating.
This year, the eTrophy will be awarded for the first time to three teams for the longest non-stop flight into Grenchen. The first team will receive prize money in the amount of 3,000 Swiss francs, and second and third place will receive 2,000 francs and 1,000 francs respectively.
