Zurich - Synthara has acquired new funds amounting to more than 11 million US dollars. It specializes in the development of semiconductors focusing on artificial intelligence (AI)-based applications.

Synthara, a semiconductor company based in Zurich, Switzerland, that specializes in AI-based applications, has received more than 11 million US dollars. According to a press release, the spin-off established in 2019 from the Institute of Neuroinformatics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) and the University of Zurich (UZH) has gained 5.5 million US dollars in funding and 5.9 million US dollars from Swiss and European grants. The funding round was led by the deep tech investor Vsquared Ventures. According to the press release, in addition to existing investors, others such as OTB Ventures, Hermann Hauser’s Onsight Ventures, and Deeptech Labs were involved. The existing investors listed are High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), DeepIEExcellis, Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB), and Sandeep Raju.

The funds are earmarked for helping to bring in-memory computing (IMC) to the mass market. IMC directly saves data to the chip memory instead of in databases on hard drives. This technology is particularly important in the field of AI applications, where it is vital to process data more rapidly and efficiently. Synthara states that this market is worth over 200 billion US dollars today and is growing by more than 15 percent every year.

According to the press release, the funding will enable Synthara to introduce its ComputeRAM product with patent pending into embedded computer applications. Synthara’s ComputeRAM is a developed  and universally implementable embedded chip that has been designed for the use of a wide range of AI-intensive applications. Alessandro Aimar, Founder and CTO of Synthara, commented in the press release: “The rise of AI is a societal and economic disruption on par with the great industrial revolutions of the past.” He adds: “As traditional semiconductor companies struggle to adapt to this new reality, Synthara aims to establish Europe as the leading force in this transformation and become the global reference for AI and advanced computing hardware.” ce/eb
