Swiss universities and research institutions regularly occupy top positions in international research rankings. The federal government now intends to establish a network of 12 technology transfer centers in Switzerland, which will help bring technologies from the research laboratory to industry. The first technology transfer center is expected to be operational in the canton of Solothurn this year.
On Monday, the umbrella association AM-TTC Alliance was founded in Dübendorf at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) for the future 12 Advanced Manufacturing Technology Transfer Centers (AM-TTC). The founding members include 22 Swiss research institutions and industrial companies, such as institutions of the ETH Domain, universities of applied sciences and other research organizations as well as companies such as ABB, Georg Fischer, Oerlikon, Siemens, BASF, Bühler, Rolex, Richemont and Hilti.
The initiative to establish a network of Swiss technology transfer centers is part of the federal government’s Digitalization action plan and aims to maintain Switzerland as a modern, high-quality production location in the long term. The planned centers will have various different thematic focuses, ranging from 3D printing of implants and the manufacture of innovative battery cells to the use of digital manufacturing technologies and robots on construction sites. Each of the centers will be set up as a public-private partnership and be financed and operated by both public funds and private companies.
