The School of Life Sciences and Facility Management at ZHAW is one of Switzerland’s leading competence centres in the field of nutrition, health, society and the environment, according to a statement.

With more students expected in the coming years, the department is running out of space. It predicts that 21,500 square metres of additional space will be required by 2030.

Now, the ZHAW is to get a new laboratory and technological building at Campus Reidbach in Wädenswil. The facility will primarily be used by the Institute for Food and Drink Innovation (ILGI) for the purposes of teaching and research.

The new building will be owned and invested in by Tuwag Immobilien AG, with the state council paying 29.6 million francs to rent it. The state council has requested 48.2 million francs from the cantonal council to make improvements to and furnish it. The canton of Zurich has signed the rental contract subject to approval by the cantonal council.

Construction is scheduled to start in 2019 at the earliest, with the lease commencing between August 2023 and August 2024.
