Zurich – The city of Zurich has been placed third worldwide in this year’s Smart City Index. The report assesses the efforts and successes of cities in the introduction of smart technologies. Its assessment is based on the perceptions of residents in each city.

The Lausanne Institute for Management Development (IMD) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) have published the second edition of their Smart City Index. This measures the extent to which cities are investing in smart technologies. Cities are assigned a rating based on the perceptions of 120 residents in each city. Respondents are asked what they perceive as the priority areas for their city. As a second pillar, they are asked about the existing infrastructure of the cities, specifically questions on mobility, health and activities.

The city of Zurich was placed third worldwide this year, after Singapore and Helsinki. It has therefore dropped one place on the previous year. Zurich’s residents gave the city a good score for the areas of health and safety, activities as well as opportunities in work and school. However, there is room for improvement when it comes to rental cost and traffic congestion.

Zurich is not the only Swiss city to be included in the rankings, with Geneva coming in seventh place. The city therefore now ranks three spots lower than last year. There are 109 cities in the ranking overall.
