Wingtra is a spin-off affiliated with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). The start-up manufactures specialized drones for aerial surveying and remote exploration. Their drones combine the positive characteristics of multirotor and fixed wing drones. Wingtra drones take off and land vertically, similar to a helicopter. At the same time, they also manage to fly forwards efficiently, as is the case with an airplane. On account of its high load capacity, the drones are also able to carry a large selection of cameras.
The start-up is now able to facilitate a new mapping method with its drones, as outlined in a press release. A software update must be carried out on the drones in order for them to use this new functionality. After this, they can also be used for what is known as “corridor mapping”. Wingtra drones can cover routes of up to 8 km in a single flight, capturing high-quality images in the process.
According to Wingtra, the new application potential of its drones could be used in planning roadworks or inspecting railways lines and pipelines. Moreover, the new functionality could also aid river mapping processes for environmental research purposes.
