Researchers at Cardiocentro Ticino are aiming to develop a device that prevents gas embolisms occurring during heart surgery. To this end, the center has now been awarded a grant of 250,000 Swiss francs by Innosuisse.

The department of Cardiac Surgery at Cardiocentro Ticino in Lugano is collaborating with the cardiovascular bioengineering group of the Foundation for Cardiological Research and Education (FCRE) on a series of projects designed to prevent complications arising during heart surgery. Their efforts include a project centered on the development of a smart device to prevent cardiac embolisms. As Cardiocentro writes in a press release, PD Dr. Stijn Vandenberghe (PhD) and Prof. Dr. med. Stefanos Demertzis have now been awarded a grant to support this development project by Innosuisse

The federal promotion agency is providing the Ticino-based research team with a total of 250,000 francs. The grant will be used to encourage even closer collaboration between heart surgeons and development engineers.

Cardiocentro is run by the Cardiocentro Ticino Foundation and has been an affiliated institute of the University of Zurich since 2012.
