Zurich – Barry Callebaut has announced the launch of a 3D printing studio for chocolate. Designed for crafting personalized chocolate creations, the service will first be available to hotels, restaurants and coffee chains in Europe.

The Zurich-based chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut has launched a 3D printing studio for chocolate via its global decoration brand Mona Lisa. Customers can specify the shape, size and design of their bespoke Belgian chocolate creations, which are then transformed into a 3D digital prototype by a team of designers before the final product is produced.

Thanks to the technology, designs can be reproduced rapidly and affordably, no matter how intricate the design. Renowned pastry chef Jordi Roca has already created cacao-flower-inspired creations with the Mona Lisa 3D Studio, which will first be available to hotels, coffee chains and restaurant in Europe. The first customer is Van der Valk, a hotel chain in the Netherlands, according to a statement

With the 3D printing studio, Barry Callebaut is responding to demand from younger generations. A study conducted by the company showed that the majority of millennials and centennials want to try new chocolate experiences and share it on social media.
