Oberengstringen ZH – IT firm Equinix is investing $51 million to expand its data centre in the Greater Zurich Area. It is regarded as an ideal location as European destinations can be reached in less than 30 milliseconds.

Equinix expanded its ZH5 data centre in Oberengstringen in the canton of Zurich just last summer. The global company has now announced that it is investing a total of $51 million to expand it even further, according to an article on itreseller.ch.

ZH5 opened in 2013 and is connected to Equinix’s other Zurich data centres ZH1, ZH2 and ZH4 via a glass fibre pipeline. ZH5 will be expanded to 7,500 square metres, making the facility one of the largest data centres in Switzerland. As a previous article from computerworld.ch reported, ZH5 currently covers around 2,000 square metres. The expansion work, which will see the data centre nearly quadruple in size, is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2019.

The investment “underscores the importance of Zurich as a strategic location for companies that require interconnection across their global IT implementations,” said Roger Semprini, Managing Director of Equinix Switzerland, adding that the Greater Zurich Area is an ideal location because all European destinations can be reached in less than 30 milliseconds.
